Inauguration of the new ice rink in Niesky

In the end of October a new ice rink was inaugurated in the German city of Niesky, which has a long ice hockey tradition. The ice stadium was designed by the architecture firm Schulitz Architects.

The attractive new venue creates a prestigious feature for the city of Niesky, continuing its long ice hockey tradition. It is integrated into the existing landscape and recreational swimming complex.

In 2014, the architecture firm Schulitz Architects won an open tender process and was awarded the contract. Construction started in February 2016. The main feature of the project is the approx. 3600 m² roof that appears to be floating freely while spanning 41 m span, covering all program components, and giving protection from precipitation, winds and stormy weather. The structural system consists of filigree three-hinged arches in combination with thin tension cables eliminating thrust at the supports. The roof is stiffened by the corrugated metal decking and by a horizontal beam around the perimeter. Two rows of large skylights provide natural light and additional natural ventilation. The local ice hockey club ELV Tornados Niesky has a new home ground in this modern, spacious ice stadium with its dome-like roof.
For this project, Schulitz Architects could rely on its design expertise having designed and built several ice hockey sport facilities in Germany, such as the DEL hockey stadium Eis Arena in Wolfsburg, the DEL compliant hockey stadium EgeTransArena in Bietigheim-Bissingen and the combined ice and swimming complex Lentpark in Cologne. Their 2016 proposal for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Ice Skating Rink ranked among the three finalists in an international competition. (Stadiaworld, 08.11.2017)
